The North Star Community Band is a proud sponsor of Gladstone Theatre in the Park (GTIP). Founded in 1988, the band joined forces one year later and has provided the pit music for 2 shows every year, celebrating their 30th anniversary in the 2018 season. Faye Rader conducted almost every show from 1989-2004 when she retired from the summer grind. Teresa Farley began her tenure in 2005 and is the current conductor.
GTIP is one of the only free community theatres in the Kansas City area and shows are presented in mid July and August. For more information on GTIP, click Here.
The pit band rehearses on Mondays and Thursdays through the months of June and July and early August with every night rehearsals during the tech week before each show. Go to the Summer Shows page to view a rehearsal schedule. Rehearsals are at Oak Park High School (North Star’s home) and tech week and shows are at the Gladstone Amphitheatre in Oak Grove Park (just to the south of the high school).
Members of the pit are drawn from the North Star Band, then from community members and area college students. The instrumentation needed varies with each show. We work very hard in a short amount of time and we take pride in providing quality music for each show. But somehow we mange to have a lot of fun along the way!
